The experience of Compex and F.C. Como Women presented at the NSCA Conference in Cesena
For the first time in Italy, the NSCA Conference 2025 in Cesena hosted a presentation by Dr. Sara Bonizzato, Medical Director of Como Women, on the use of Compex tools—Como Women official partner—on the athletes.
In her talk titled “Muscle electrostimulation in sport: a forgotten technology,” Dr. Bonizzato explored the evolution of this methodology, from its origins to the most recent models of integrated application within sports clubs.
The Como Women case, which has adopted Compex technology to optimize recovery times and implement prevention programs, now stands as a concrete case study of conscious and innovative usage.
The presentation at the NSCA Conference
During the NSCA Conference 2025—an international congress focused on sports performance—Compex, a leading brand in performance and muscle recovery technologies, joined Dr. Sara Bonizzato as part of the speaker panel, with a dedicated session on the role of muscle electrostimulation in modern sports.
In the first part of her presentation, Dr. Bonizzato provided a historical overview of electrostimulation, tracing its origins, major development stages, and cycles of popularity—from the commercial boom of the 1990s and 2000s to the current phase of maturity, in which this technology is increasingly integrated into structured training and rehabilitation programs.
The Como Women experience
The second part of the presentation focused on physiological and practical aspects, with an in-depth look at the direct experience of Como Women.
In response to the need to optimize resources and recovery times, the club introduced 16 Compex devices, distributed among the medical area, performance staff, and athletes with varying workloads.
An expansion of the technological setup is also planned, with the wide implementation of Compex Ayre Recovery Boots, increasing availability for players who do not yet have their own personal systems.
“Electrostimulation provides concrete support for all the work carried out by the Performance and Medical Departments, particularly in injury recovery,” explained Sara Bonizzato. “At our club, integrating Compex technology has improved load management, optimized recovery times, and ensured such widespread technological use that we can utilize the resources efficiently across the entire squad, without compromising the tools needed for injury management.”
Looking ahead: the youth sector also involved
The project also includes extending Compex technology to the youth sector, both in terms of muscle electrostimulation and Ayre Recovery Boots. This implementation will be overseen by the physiotherapist responsible for the Primavera team, a professional with advanced expertise in clinical and sports applications.
This initiative confirms Como Women’s commitment to building a club culture focused on prevention, care, and technical-scientific training of staff, starting with the youth teams.
“Systematic training for all medical and performance staff becomes essential,” Bonizzato concluded, “so that consistent and conscious use of the tools is paired with the best possible application strategy. That’s what turns technology into a true everyday ally.”
